What Is Egress Analysis?

An egress analysis evaluates whether a building's means of egress, the paths occupants would use to exit during an emergency, meet code requirements for width, travel distance, number of exits, and arrangement. It typically covers occupant load calculations, required egress width based on that load, travel distance to the nearest exit, and confirmation that enough independent exit paths exist given the occupancy and building configuration.

Egress analysis has to account for the building's occupancy classification, since different occupancy types carry different occupant load factors and egress requirements. An assembly occupancy with dense seating requires substantially more egress capacity per square foot than an office occupancy, for example, which is why occupancy classification and egress analysis are closely linked.

Egress calculations that were correct earlier in design can become non-compliant if a later floor plan change alters travel distances or removes what was previously an independent exit path, without a full recheck of the egress analysis against the updated layout. This is a common and serious gap, since egress compliance has direct life-safety implications rather than being a purely administrative code requirement.

FAQ

Is this term used consistently across the industry, or does it vary by firm or region? Most of these terms are used fairly consistently across the industry, though exact usage can vary slightly by firm, region, or project delivery method. When in doubt, project-specific contract documents typically define exactly how a term is being used on that project.

How does this connect to AI-assisted drawing review? Structured AI's QA/QC Compliance Checks, Document Chat, and Overlay features are built to catch the kinds of issues and inconsistencies that show up in exactly this part of the design and construction process, with findings tied to the exact page and location involved.
