What Is Specification Section?
A specification section is a distinct portion of a project's written specifications covering a specific scope of work, material, or system, organized according to a standard numbering system like MasterFormat. Where drawings show what and where, specifications describe the specific products, materials, and quality standards required, in more detail than drawings alone typically convey.
A specification section for a given system, say, structural steel, will typically cover required material grades, fabrication standards, welding procedures, testing requirements, and submittal requirements for that scope, information that wouldn't be practical to show entirely on the drawings themselves. The drawings and specifications together, not either alone, define the full requirements for a given scope of work.
A common and costly failure mode is a specification section that doesn't match what's actually shown on the corresponding drawings, calling for a different product, material, or performance standard than the drawings depict. This spec-to-drawing mismatch is a recurring source of RFIs and, if not caught before construction, a source of disputes about which document governs.
FAQ
Is this term used consistently across the industry, or does it vary by firm or region? Most of these terms are used fairly consistently across the industry, though exact usage can vary slightly by firm, region, or project delivery method. When in doubt, project-specific contract documents typically define exactly how a term is being used on that project.
How does this connect to AI-assisted drawing review? Structured AI's QA/QC Compliance Checks, Document Chat, and Overlay features are built to catch the kinds of issues and inconsistencies that show up in exactly this part of the design and construction process, with findings tied to the exact page and location involved.
